Scaling a data center requires the ability to avoid network bottlenecks, a goal that data center architects traditionally achieved by adding bandwidth and network interfaces. A smart NIC is a networking device equipped with built-in compute capacity. This means that a smart NIC can perform tasks like data encryption and load balancing, which would otherwise need to be handled using its CPU. Examples of hard IP cores include high-speed transceivers for protocols like Ethernet and PCI Express, dedicated memory controllers, and hard processor systems, such as the ARM cores found in AMD’s Zynq and Versal families of FPGAs.
