PDF Champ today announced an update to its free online metadata editor, adding the ability to clear a document's metadata fields entirely rather than only replacing their values.
The metadata editor previously supported changing a PDF's title, author, subject, keywords, and creator fields. The update adds a direct option to remove that information altogether, addressing a common requirement for documents being distributed publicly or handed off outside their originating organization.

PDF metadata is not visible on the page itself but is stored within the file and can surface in document viewers, search indexing, and file properties panels. Fields such as author name or internal subject tags are frequently left unchanged from a document's original creation, even when the file is later shared in a different context.

The update includes the following:
• A clear option for each metadata field, in addition to the existing edit function
• Immediate application of changes, with no file uploaded to a server
• Support for documents with no existing metadata, as well as those with fields already populated
• No limit on the number of files a user may process

"Metadata correction and metadata removal are different requests, and we wanted the tool to support both without extra steps," said a spokesperson for PDF Champ.

The tool continues to run entirely within the user's browser. For organizations needing to clear or standardize metadata across a large number of files at once, PDF Champ's desktop application for Windows and Mac includes batch metadata processing.
