Melbourne, Victoria – Climate Green Melbourne is advising homeowners across Melbourne and surrounding suburbs to act early as major changes to Australia’s solar battery rebate structure come into effect from 1 May 2026. The upcoming updates will reshape how incentives are calculated, with a stronger focus on supporting small to mid-sized household battery systems.
Under the proposed changes, battery rebates delivered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) will gradually reduce over time and will also taper based on battery size. While batteries will continue to receive an upfront discount via Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), the value per kilowatt-hour will decline more quickly and update every six months instead of annually.
According to Climate Green Melbourne, this marks a critical shift for homeowners planning to install batteries as part of their solar journey.
“From May 2026, the rebate will favour practical household battery sizes rather than very large systems,” said a spokesperson from Climate Green Melbourne. “For most Melbourne homes, this is actually good news—well-sized batteries will continue to receive strong support, but timing and system design will matter more than ever.”
What’s Changing From 1 May 2026?
Faster STC reductions: The rebate value per kWh will step down twice a year, meaning incentives will decline more rapidly between 2026 and 2030.
Battery size tapering:
The first portion of usable capacity (up to 14 kWh) will receive the strongest rebate support
Larger capacities above this threshold will receive reduced discounts per additional kWh
Focus on solar-connected batteries: Batteries must be installed with a new or existing solar system to qualify. Standalone battery installations will not be eligible.
What This Means for Melbourne Homeowners
For most households, battery systems in the 10–15 kWh range—ideal for evening usage, blackout protection, and maximising solar self-consumption—will remain highly attractive. Larger systems designed for whole-home or commercial-style backup may see reduced incentive value per kWh after May 2026.
Climate Green Melbourne is encouraging homeowners who are already considering batteries to plan installations before the changes take effect, or at least ensure their system is carefully sized to maximise post-2026 rebate value.
